GITANANDA TEACHINGS

“When we are shallow breathers, special nerve receptors buried deep in the lungs remain dormant. Only when we deeply breathe in and out, are these inspiratory receptors and expiratory receptors called into activity. That activity is a reflexo-genic feed-back from the lungs to a special breathing centre, the respiratory centre within the brain. This respiratory centre governs not only our in and out breath, but our ability to hold in and hold out the breath. To gain control over this centre is a conscious art of Pranayama Yoga” and in the latter “the whole breathing function is taken over by the higher brain which is used by the conscious mind. Thus practice of Pranayama becomes an important step in consciously ‘evolving’ ourselves or ‘growing spiritually’”.
